POPULAR NATURAL STONE FINISHES
HONED – The surface is buffed to a smooth matte finish – Smooth with squared edges and without a polished surface. Honed finishes unlike polished finishes are not reflective. The honed finish is a satin smooth surface with little light reflection. This finish is often used on walking surfaces and other areas where heavy traffic would wear off a polished finish. Honed finishes are used in interior wall covering. It can also used on the exterior in warm environments, and table tops.
TUMBLED – Lightly tumbled to achieve rounded edges and a surface that is not as smooth as honed.
ANTIQUE TUMBLED – Medium tumble edges and surface to achieve a slight rustic look.
FLAMED FINISH – The surface has not been buffed. The rough saw cuts are left creating an irregular rough matte finish. The flamed finish is a rough texture used frequently on floor tiles and vertical applications. Color and particulate or vein patterns vary from block to block. Blocks are usually quarried in sizes 100 x 60 x 60 inches. The major uses include: chemistry and fire resistant work surfaces, fireplace facings and inner hearths, etc; where heat is an issue.
POLISHED – A high gloss surface. Polishing can be done only on crystallized stones. A polished finish doesn’t affect the porosity of the stone. A polished finish is quite popular as it enhances the color and markings of the material. Polished finishes are reflective. A stone with a polished finish is very smooth and reflective. This type of finish is used in reception areas, where marble, granite and some harder limestone are laid. The most popular uses of polished stone are in; interior and exterior wall cladding, interior and exterior paving, fireplace facing and hearth, lavatory tops, residential and commercial counter tops, table tops, statuary, novelty items many non architectural uses, such as booth paste, paint whiting, agricultural lime, etc.
