How to lay ceramic tile the amazingly simple and easy way

by Steve Ng

Whenever you looked at those perfectly laid ceramic tiles in others' living rooms or kitchens, have you wondered how to do that ? Do you know the secrets and techniques of laying tiles effectively? Tile is expensive to buy and installation can cost a fortune. If you learned the necessary technique, you saved money and in the mean time you enjoyed the satisfaction of personally decorating your home. In this article I am going to briefly describe the necessary steps you have to follow in order to successfully lay ceramic tile.

A pattern is critical before you can begin installing ceramic tile flooring. After you have designed your pattern layout, you can then proceed to install the ceramic tiles.

(Step 1) Prepare the subfloor before laying ceramic tile. Lay the ceramic tile backboards over plywood or patching a cement foundation to create a level surface.

(Step 2) For the pattern you are going to use to lay ceramic tile, start at the entrance of the main door to the room.

(Step 3) Snap a chalk line perpendicular to the entrance to use as a guideline to lay your first row of ceramic tile. Make sure the line is at RIGHT angle. Then extend the line from the main door to the opposite wall.

(Step 4) Lay your first row of ceramic tile along the chalk line. Now between each tile you have to use spacers to make sure that the tiles equally spaced. If the tiles are irregularly spaced, the completed pattern may be deformed, so please pay attention here.

(Step 5) Install a temporary board at the end of the row when you can no longer lay a full tile.

(Step 6) Put down ceramic tiles along the board (installed in Step 5 ) perpendicular to the first row.

(Step 7) Measure the spaces at either end of this row to determine how much you need to move the center row to achieve an equal border on all walls.

Now that you know the steps for laying ceramic tiles. Different patterns have their own difficulties, so the process may not be as easy as the above brief steps described. If you want to save money and enjoy the fun during your tile laying project, get yourself a book (or preferably videos) and learn the proper tile setting instructions.
